A little longer stay in sight!
Much converse do I find in thee,
Historian of my infancy!
Float near me; do not yet depart!
Dead times revive in thee:
Thou bring’st, gay creature as thou art!
A solemn image to my heart,
My father’s family!

Oh! pleasant, pleasant were the days,
The time, when, in our childish plays,
My sister Emmeline and I
Together chased the butterfly!
A very hunter did I rush
Upon the prey:–with leaps and springs
I followed on from brake to bush;
But she, God love her, feared to brush
The dust from off its wings.

Upon Westminster Bridge http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/upon-westminster-bridge/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/upon-westminster-bridge/#comments Tue, 24 Jun 2008 19:34:57 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/2008/06/24/upon-westminster-bridge/ Earth has not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth like a garment wear
The beauty of the morning; silent , bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
Open unto the fields, and to the sky,
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did the sun more beautifully steep
In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;
Ne’er saw I, never felt a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:
Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!

My Heart Leaps Up http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/my-heart-leaps-up/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/my-heart-leaps-up/#comments Sun, 11 May 2008 20:33:48 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/2008/05/11/my-heart-leaps-up/ My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!
The Child is father of the Man;
And I could wish my days to be
Bound each to each by natural piety.

On Her First Ascent to Helvellyn – Wordsworth http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/on-her-first-ascent-to-helvellyn-wordsworth/ http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/on-her-first-ascent-to-helvellyn-wordsworth/#comments Fri, 21 Mar 2008 21:25:42 +0000 tejvan http://www.shortpoems.org/poem/2008/03/21/on-her-first-ascent-to-helvellyn-wordsworth/ INMATE of a mountain-dwelling,
Thou hast clomb aloft, and gazed
From the watch-towers of Helvellyn;
Awed, delighted, and amazed!

Potent was the spell that bound thee
Not unwilling to obey;
For blue Ether’s arms, flung round thee,
Stilled the pantings of dismay.

Lo! the dwindled woods and meadows;
What a vast abyss is there!
Lo! the clouds, the solemn shadows,
And the glistenings–heavenly fair!

And a record of commotion
Which a thousand ridges yield;
Ridge, and gulf, and distant ocean
Gleaming like a silver shield!

Maiden! now take flight;–inherit
Alps or Andes–they are thine!
With the morning’s roseate Spirit,
Sweep their length of snowy line;

Or survey their bright dominions
In the gorgeous colours drest
Flung from off the purple pinions,
Evening spreads throughout the west!

Thine are all the coral fountains
Warbling in each sparry vault
Of the untrodden lunar mountains;
Listen to their songs!–or halt,

To Niphates’ top invited,
Whither spiteful Satan steered;
Or descend where the ark alighted,
When the green earth re-appeared;

For the power of hills is on thee,
As was witnessed through thine eye
Then, when old Helvellyn won thee
To confess their majesty!

1816.
