Short poems on faith
“Faith” is a fine invention
When Gentlemen can see—
But Microscopes are prudent
In an Emergency.
– Emily Dickinson
Faith—is the Pierless Bridge
Supporting what We see
Unto the Scene that We do not—
Too slender for the eyeIt bears the Soul as bold
As it were rocked in Steel
With Arms of Steel at either side—
It joins—behind the VeilTo what, could We presume
The Bridge would cease to be
To Our far, vacillating Feet
A first Necessity.
To lose one’s faith—surpass
The loss of an Estate—
Because Estates can be
Replenished—faith cannot—Inherited with Life—
Belief—but once—can be—
Annihilate a single clause—
And Being’s—Beggary—
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build’em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
– Rudyard Kipling
Faith is wisdom.
Faith is power.
Faith is heart-fragrance.
Faith is the sun-child
Of the Beyond.
Sri Chinmoy
You have no faith in God.
No harm, just run speedily
With faith in yourself.
You will reach your goal.
I have faith in God.
Although I went slowly
With my faith in God,
I have already reached my Goal.
Sri Chinmoy
Arise in faith!
Earth will give you
All its love.
Arise in faith!
Heaven will give you
All its joy.
Arise in faith!
God will give you
All His Freedom.
Arise in faith!
You will realise
That you are not only in all,
Of all and for all,
But also
You are ALL.
– Sri Chinmoy
Of all the gifts Thine hand bestows,
Thou Giver of all good!
Not heaven itself a richer knows
Than my Redeemer’s blood.Faith too, the blood-receiving grace,
From the same hand we gain;
Else, sweetly as it suits our case,
That gift had been in vain.Till Thou Thy teaching power apply,
Our hearts refuse to see,
And weak, as a distemper’d eye,
Shut out the view of Thee.Blind to the merits of Thy Son,
What misery we endure!
Yet fly that Hand from which alone
We could expect a cure.We praise Thee, and would praise Thee more,
To Thee our all we owe:
The precious Saviour, and the power
That makes Him precious too.
– William Cooper
When from the vaulted wonder of the sky
The curtain of the light is drawn aside,
And I behold the stars in all their wide
Significance and glorious mystery,
Assured that those more distant orbs are suns
Round which innumerable worlds revolve,—
My faith grows strong, my day-born doubts dissolve,
And death, that dread annulment which life shuns,
Or fain would shun, becomes to life the way,
The thoroughfare to greater worlds on high,
The bridge from star to star. Seek how we may,
There is no other road across the sky;
And, looking up, I hear star-voices say:
“You could not reach us if you did not die.”
– Henry Abbey
My Lord Supreme,
What is the difference
Between faith and love?
“My child,
There is no difference
Between faith and love.
“Faith and love
Are two complementary souls.
“Faith is the heart of love
And love is the breath of faith.”
– Sri Chinmoy
